Skincare Review: BELIMBING ISLAND
[Sooo well this will be my first review post on this blog, copied from my personal SNS page. I'll try to crosspost more reviews that I've done, hopefully they'll be somewhat helpful haha]

So I just thought I should make a review on this (because I think it's not bullshit and yeah it's nice to support locals). Jadi ceritanya libur panjang lalu (apa sebelumnya lagi) kukan balik rumah, and a whole set of these were on my desk. They were supposed to be for my mother, or sister, who were mostly at home (than me who's living outside the city). Cuma kan nyokap udah pakai routine dari dokter (erha) dan dia dan kakak wajahnya sensitif (yea kayaknya gue mewarisi kulit kebal wong sumatra bokap), jadi dikasi de ke gue semuanya (yaaaaay #anakgratisan //plak).
At first gue sangsi liat packagingnya - mostly for the unheard name, especially about half a year ago (iya gue coba uda bbrp bulan jd bukan baru pake bentar lgsg review kayak kalo make up). *TBH packagingnya (box) terlihat cukup profesional* - clean cut, nice color scheme, but there are logos like 100%INDONESIA and lambang pemprov DKI yang agak?? IDK, I personally don't like when a product tries so hard to sell something other than itself (the quality) - so those kinda threw me off a bit (especially with the unheard brand name). It's pretty much just personal preference and bias, tho.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Anyway, all in all it made me research a bit about the brand. I asked my parents, since I thought maybe my dad just bought it for mom or me (he sometimes did that, used to be so with Amway products), but it turns out it was his colleague who owns (/runs? had something to do?? idk I'm not him haha) the brand and I guess gave him some gift samples. Of course, it doesn't guarantee this right away - so I googled a bit more. It turns out the entire brand was *initiated in UI's lab*, and is developed under the same team, trying to *incorporate the local produces of starfruits in the region as the star ingredients in the product's formulas* (the name Belimbing Island is supposedly referring to Depok as the region that produces the starfruits/belimbing).
They claim to have found & incorporated a new particular method in the extraction of the starfruit's essences, and highlighted those as being safe and works well with the skin better than from other sources. Okay, I'm sold.
Anyway they've also showcased their products abroad at conventions (following the press releases displayed online) with quite some good responses. Gue dapet dikasih, so I'm not that keen on the pricing, but they are supposed to be pretty affordable dengan harga skin care sekitar 30-50rb (serum 100rb, but come on, it's serum, and quite plentiful of it). Line brand berkisar antara body care, skin care, dan hair care dan bisa didapat di http://belimbingisland.com atau lewat mahasiswa dan masyarakat sekitar yang affiliated (?).
CONTAINER & INSIDE PACKAGING
Alright fastforward buka box. Kembali masalah packaging (tube), agaknya kurang bagus kalau dibandingin dengan more established brands in the physical market - but I'm quite forgiving because box dan overall themenya IMO cukup well-thought untuk standar produk lokal (apalagi considerably new). Jadi dari set yang gue dapat ada body scrub, hand & body lotion, facewash, serum, sunscreen cream, dan night cream kan. Disini beda2 sih, jadi kupisah poinnya ya.
*Body scrub: containernya plastik (no box as I recall), tapi mayan sturdy. You get decent amount of product. I forgot how much since I've thrown the box, but the container is about the size of my palm and pretty thick. I'm guessing it's about as much as my Rice Mask from Skin Food so it's probably 100-150g
*Hand & Body Lotion: at first I kinda like the container but.....hating it in the end. It comes in a tube with a press-to-open head like Tresemme's shampoo or condis. That part is okay, what I hate is just that to get it out you need to shake it down hard like ketchup and squeeze it too to get it out. ...And it's a pretty hard bottle. It's also weird that they only put out 100g for a body product (too little, no?)
*Face wash: Same container with above (the lotion), except since the product is more liquid-y, you don't get as much problem with trying to squeeze it or shake it. I think it's okay
*Sunscreen cream + night cream: They share the same container. It's your typical cream container, ....so typical it looks shady.(you know, kayak krim2 'mentega' di luar sana). It still uses the same theme of the brand, with bright yellow cap and somewhat metallic labels. To me the packaging on this particular product looks the cheapest, somehow. Label plastik metaliknya agak kliatan gelap (and cheap), dan bikin susah dibaca. Printannya juga kurang jelas, agak less defined klo bukan berbayang. But about the tube itself, I think it works just fine in preserving the product as well as about the accessibility. ....I just hope they make it a bit more personal so it will look different than those shady ass creams.
*Serum: Ditaro di botol kecil dengan pipet; I think it's pretty hygienic. You get a decent 20ml out of the product (pretty decent for a serum). Nice gold rim, frosted glass bottle - overall my favorite out of the batch.
***PERFORMANCE
Jadi karena gue anak yg tida disiplin dalam hal skincare, ngga semuanya gue pake rutin. Yang biasa gue pake rutin cuma serum, diikutin sunscreen sama night cream. So you can take this with additional grains of salt ofc
*Scrub: Wanginya naujubile. Gue rasa buat yg make ini bakal notable banget. For some reason the fragrance in this product bukan main, bahkan untuk gue yang sangat tidak pedulian/peka fragrance. Scrubnya enak sih, creamy, sejuk, decent grains, cuma ya itu, klo lo pake ini kayaknya lo ga usah pake parfum lagi seharian. If you hate fragrances on skin care (especially with the fact this isn't a delicate one, either) - this is definitely a skip for you.
*Hand & Body Lotion: still same fragrance issues - wangi banget and not a delicate one. Tapi jauh lebih subtle dibanding scrubnya, so it's pretty tolerable I guess - it does go away after awhile. Lotion ini pas dioles pasti kerasa agak sticky, mungkin tekstur sama konsistensinya mepet hand cream dikit. Very moisturizing, sejuk juga. Dan pas pake you will get lightened pretty soon. Kulit lo bakal jadi cerah instan di awal pemakaian - tapi maksud gue bukan putih instan macam coscos foundie, lotion instafair, atau one-day brightening. Maksud gue cerah tipikal2 klo pake lotion yang base vit Cnya tinggi; kulit lo bakal mencerah beberapa shade dengan undertone yang makin kliatan (in my case jadi kuning langsat cerah sekali ehe). Recommended, tapi ya klo lo ga anti wangi. Gue sih lagi jarang makenya karena males mencetinnya sama lagi abisin lotion promonya Watson (yang tinggi vit C juga)
*Facewash: I don't use this often simply karena kayaknya ga cocok di gue. I'd rather stick to my Clean & clear facial wash. That aside this is a light and refreshing facewash. You will feel pretty smooth and somewhat hydrated using these. Mungkin rasanya kayak pakai wardah yg basic face washnya ato facial cleanser bening Clean & clear tapi lebih slimy. Layak coba if you're into those kinds of cleanser. Wanginya cukup subtle kok untuk disini.
*Sunscreen cream: Gue mixed feeling sama ini, tp karena gue males beli sunscreen ya I pake aja. I think this works very nicely as a sunscreen; as in blocking the sun. But the texture is very creamy and a tad bit oily, I think you should be careful to not use too much of it or it will ruin your make up, since it does have quite the texture. Klo ngga pake make up ya aman aja, I think it's great for like morning jogging? It does brighten the face a bit and feels a bit hydrating. That aside I think you need you clean this one particularly thoroughly in the end of day since this could be clogging up your pores.
*Night cream: krimnya a bit translucent, dan yang jelas pas dioles adem. Has quite a bit tacky consistency. I don't have much to talk about this one. I like it. It feels hydrating dan pas bangun paginya I feel my skin is very healthy, well hydrated, and less oily (yes I do think it takes care of the oil that tends to pile up overnight)
*Serum: Fiiiiinally last of the batch. Ini favorit gue. Dipake cukup 2-3 tetes aja tapi klo mo lebih ato hemat2 setetes juga keknya gapapa. Dia cair, tapi agak slimy jadi pas dioles ke wajah it glides smoothly dan gampang disebar. Sangat adem and it feels really nice after using it.
TBH sebelum pake ini wajah gue area dagu lagi masalah karena lg suka kering dan suka gue kopek, dan I thinkit does a big job in helping it recover (sebelumnya gue pake madu tapi kek itu cuma bantu nutup luka aja --- yg terus gue buka lg karena tangan gue gatel HAHAHA). bbrp minggu make ini kulit sekitar situ kembali jadi 'kulit' (?) tanpa jadi terlalu flaky (mengurangi insting ngopek2//plek).
It is perhaps something to do with the aloe (this serum is mainly starfruit vit C+aloe), it does help a lot with scarring and skin recovery.
Wearing it for months I do feel like it clears up my face considerably. Sebelumnya gue pernah juga pakai serum vit C (from Adore) dan itu udah bau ga enak bikin break out gitu kan, but I like this one. Emang kadang muncul bruntus2 kecil setelah make lama, but somehow it doesn't feel as annoying - cuma muncul 1-2 yang cepet kering dan ga gitu gatel. I do think the vit C in the formula goes along with the skin much better. Kalau lo pengen coba serum vit C tapi takut kurang cocok mungkin bisa coba ini dulu karena vit Cnya lebih 'friendly' (it is literally one of their selling points)
CONCLUSION
Overall mana produk favorit gue? Yang serum dan night cream; is considering repurchasing the serum/put it as a permanent routine - meanwhile untuk night cream mikir2 lagi since i'm not a skincare girl in the first place. The sunscreen is fine but I think I'd want something smoother. Will probably buy the lotion again if they change packaging and change/cut down the fragrance.
As a conclusion I do think the products work just fine, one much better than the other.
Kualitas yang rasanya cukup konsisten agaknya bahwa pas dipake berasa adem ; quite hydrating, dan vit Cnya friendly - ngga terlalu asam/react badly di kulit (I do usually get unwanted side effects from other vit C based products after a month of use). Common ingredients disini selain vit C belimbing agaknya adalah aloe (and hey I'm a big aloe fan I even love to eat them), dan di beberapa produk ada kacang hijau dsb2; it's pretty natural. It's also stated that parts of the profit will go into the development and conservation of the local starfruits plants (& research I guess) - so I guess that's a plus point. Actually I'm also interested in the toner as well since some of my friends have been really recommending the use of toner lately and I like this brand's liquid formula.
Silverline; this has been a pretty pleasant experience - I mean it's not just a local home-made product - public institutions (UI, Ristek Dikti, pemprov DKI, Bhayangkari) has their hands on the development of this brand, trying to put local resources to work. It works (finally something works and you can feel it and get your hands on it) and it feels good. There are things to improve, but overall I do think they are quite the quality products. They seem to put serious efforts on these products and I hope the brand will stay strong and will live for a long, long time. I'll try to support the brand more in the future & can't wait for it's newer releases. : ]

HapusIndeed, it's still somewhat unheard of let alone reviewed, which is part of the reason I made the post hahaha
It kind of does, I think, but less of a spot treatment. I think it'll work better as more of a supporting skincare to help with the acne-treatment, honestly. I can confidently say though that it shouldn't aggravate your acne condition (at least based on my experience). I tend to have problems with skincares with moisturizing quality, especially the rather creamy or lotion-y ones that aggravate or worsen my acne spots, but I didn't have it with this one, it feels pretty clear and refreshing on the skin (including on the acne spots).
